alllllllrighty then....I was waiting for someone to step up and tell, but I suppose, I was in the thick of it from the begining, and this of course is my side of the wonderous event...first off, you will NEVER see, all in one place the Vaquero Traditions, assembled, like this...to immerse yourself in that nuance, is incredible...to listen to Cinch comment on the degree of difficulty of "shot" taken, and elaborate on the reasons "why"..enhanced the entire
event..meeting Two Cents, and his lady, Sarah, Friend, Reata, Washoe Kat, and her hubby, John, Blaine, Shelley, Cody and his Mom. Watchin Mr. Smooth Brannaman, and Richard Caldwell, fresh off of back surgery, ask his pony to lay down, so he could get on, was incredible...my heart was stollen by a big lunking white gelding, named Wilbur, who despite being the biggest boned horse there,(and to look at him, ya gotta think there hasta be a little draft horse in there, SOMEWHERE), get down to business, and show his mettle around those bulls...whew...big, and agile...one of the finest atheletes there..then Richard and Nancy Caldwell's grandson...who is 8, roped, and showed us all what it means to cowboy up..tenacious, and sure that he could do it, putting his good buckskin gelding to the test...was the highlight for me. Cute, is the embodiment of longhorn calves, they are wiley, quick, and hard to catch...don't mess with their mamas!!!

Sam, who caught, and held, and caught, and held and caught, and threw long shots, loops that floated, loops that were stingers, amazing, and how he stays humble is beyond me...what a gracious, talented soul.

Prairie Karen dug out all of her silver jewels, and presented her booth so well, am proud to call her friend...and Davee Greer is back at her horse hair hitchin, and what a wonder-talent..the saddles, the bits, the reins...all of the things I love...
And, then, there was the bbq ribs, and root beer floats... I was a satisfied soul. The best weekend of my life, where I know everything I love is there...good horses, humble, talented hands, smart, beautiful cattle, cute little long horn babies spotted and big eyed, obnoxious bulls, kids with good horses, just begining to believe in themselves, and having fun, ice cream, jewlery, and good friends. Oh. And the chinks, and flat hats, monels, and rawhide. Bliss.

Thanks, Red! Your words passed on to me a bit of the flavor and atmosphere of the event. I really want to try to get there next year.

Thanks for posting that Red. No doubt I am planning on going next year. I regret not going this year but funding-wise I just couldn't do it.

well, I am already plannin!!! And NEXT year, it is going to be even better...and bigger...soon as Gwen posts the dates, I am reserving rooms...you know what one of the best parts of the weekend was? I had to sit in the airport, after dropin Reata off, had six hours, to sit...and, allot of the folks who attended the event were flying out.."kindered strangers"..lol about 18-20 flying out, all with their loot. Flat hats at the airport...every one of them stopped to say hello, waved or nodded as we went back to our homes..."where do you live, how did you like the weekend"....all coming back next year...and I hope you do too...

Unfortunately I didn't get to go this year. However Mary Hyde has posted 3 albums on her website http://www.buckaroocountry.com/. After wading thru the 500 + photos she put up in those albums, that has to be as about as close to being there as I can get.

I also picked Buck right out, and his daughter, Reata. But I'd love to know who the other riders are. I saw a few horses I liked but interestingly not as many as I expected. Photos, of course, only capture moments in time, but I only saw one horse that really grabbed me in the competition photos - that looked consistently good in multiple shots. I'd have to look again to get a number. Then there were a couple of others that caught my eye in the photos of the horses just walking outside the arena - the black Cynthia mentioned was one of those.

was the young girl Buck's daughter?

Yes, the older of the two girl riders I saw in the photos. She looks very much at home in that saddle, a real buckaroo gal. :)

is she the one with the braided pigtails? How old is Reata now?

is she the one with the braided pigtails? How old is Reata now?No, I don't know who that little girl is. Reata has one braid down the back. She's 12, I think.

These links are kind of flaky - don't know if they'll work. The first album has lots of photos of Reata. She's number 34.

This is supposed to be one of her and Buck together. (From behind, unfortunately!)

If the link doesn't work, look at pictures 97 and 269 in the Californios B album.
