Hi up there in OR, from down here in CA. :)
I recently had a Texas cowboy visiting and I was surprised by the degree to which the shape of the hat seems to matter. He did not express any degree of confidence in a horseman with a different style of hat. I thought that was small minded.
Well, to my mind an eclectic horseman should wear any style of hat that functions well in the environment where it is used. As for myself, I wear a Troxel.
Welcome to the forum.

Well, to my mind an eclectic horseman should wear any style of hat that functions well in the environment where it is used. As for myself, I wear a Troxel.LOL. And mine's an International Air Lite. I bought a Troxel Dakota to replace the International that got too old. I really was hoping it would fit my head better. It's usable - I rode in it for many months but finally I had to go get myself another International for everyday riding and the Troxel was demoted to my backup helmet. The Dakota was made for a rounder head than the one I've got, but I do find it more attractive than the average helmet. Still, if I really cared what I looked like I wouldn't ride in my husband's old shirts and I'd clean up my boots more often. ;)
Sometimes I wish I didn't value my brain matter so much ... when I was fifteen I loved riding with no hat, no helmet. But my helmet is like my seat belt; I don't ride without it.

Helmets have there place and thats not on my head. As far as the style of the hat it really depics were the buckaroo hails from you can see alot of the differnt styles at some of the differnt ranch rodeos. While I think your right about him passing judgment on another guy for not wearing the right hat because with each style of brim comes a differnt style of horseman ship if you will their shapes are very regional. You can tell where a working cowboy is from by the crease in their hat
My 'helmet'. I think helmets are good idea, but of all the parts I have ever had broken, smacked, squished... my head was the least of my worries.
I want a new hat pretty bad.

How'd you get the picture embedding work on this? I have been trying to get it to work on my posts and haven't had any luck! All my posts on other forums seem to work fine. Weird.
Webshots. Just the little deal over on the right side of the album. I'll show off a little... because I can. And I like to share.

Rhythm Beads are fun. The person you bought from has been doing them longer than I have. I saw them in various places online and thought I could do my own style and artistic flair a little bit differently than most.
Sorry for hijacking the thread...

Oh my goodness! I was so busy looking for rhythm beads in your photo that I failed to notice your mecate the first time around. Did Sara make that for you? You have excellent taste. LOL. I posted pics of my Hagel mecate in a different thread but I'm on a roll with the photo posting so here's another:
http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/5091/2810289260036196287S600x600Q85.jpg (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2810289260036196287mckglM)
Look at all familiar?
I'm riding with a crushed and bloody toe in this picture, just grinning and bearing it - didn't want to yank my boot off and look at it until after my husband took the photos and left. I was afraid he'd drag me right off home and I'd miss my photo opportunity! After he drove off I took care of my horse and then stuck my foot in a bucket of ice water. Couldn't get any kind of shoe back on my foot afterwards so that was my last ride for awhile!
Franca,
I love the color of your horse!
Since we are posting photos:

JRW,
Ooh, I'm seeing spots! Handsome fellow.
I love the color of my mare also. I think it's beautiful, but not only that, it's the perfect practical color for me. I'm not hugely into bathing; dark bay cleans up really nicely with just a bit of elbow grease and Show Sheen or Cowboy Magic. Yeah, there's still dirt underneath but on the surface she gleams. ;) She's always had a naturally shiny coat. I'd be a very bad match for a pinto like Exy's Speedy. I love white - but only on other people's horses, LOL!

Your mare Franca reminds me A LOT of Speedy's girl friend. Her name is Hazel. She is an amazing mare that has a natural self-carraige. I absolutely adore her. Here is a picture of her:

Yes, she did. I love doing business with Sara. She and I also share a passion for dogs, especially rescued dogs. Sara is very interesting and, of course, produces fabulous mecates and other work.
I mentioned that Sara made me a special dog leash, with a locking alligator clasp and a padded handle:

It`s good to know there are still real cowboys in this world, out on large tracts of land, with real cattle, doing real work.
Thanks for sharing a little bit of your life with us through your pictures. :-)

buckarooMan- i have looked at the pictures you posted a zillion times now. thank you for sharing them. i have to say as terrific as they are, i am sad here, and wishing that i were able to cowboy like that. also, i pm'd you a while ago letting you know that i took your advice and got my monels from trina weber. hope you got my thank you. i'm very pleased w/ them. next weekend i'll be riding in a cowsorting workshop. and i'll have my first ranch roping clinic in october. i've been riding in only horsemanship clinics for the past year. i'm going to buy my first rope in a couple weeks. my trainer suggested king ropes and gave me a catalog.

Yes I did get your Pm sorry I did not respond back. I am glad you are as pleased with them as I am with my bells from her. For your first rope I would try and shy away from a 60' rope and stay in the 45' range just for the simplistic fact that it will not be as much of a headache for you to handle. Then if you feel comfortable with it step up too the 60' rope. Good luck with the clinic and hope all goes well for you.
Thanks Jason
