It has been two years since Lee left us. For those of you who did not know Lee she learned her horsemanship at Fort Riley, Kansas from the last of the old horse soldiers. She went on to study in Europe with some of the greats of dressage before settling on a ranch in Colorado, which she worked with her beloved Missouri Fox Trotters. Together with Liz Graves she brought enlightened horsemanship to the easy gaited horse community. And what a woman: tough as rawhide, colorful of speech, drank her whiskey neat. She is much missed.
This poem was written for Lee, on the night her death was made public.
I Think She Went Riding
You slipped away from us last night,
Gone riding.
So many horses came to carry you
silently, softly, gently.
Ethereal steeds with heavenly gaits,
grateful you understood them.
They took you home under the moonlight,
they knew the way.
I know you felt the wind in your hair again,
experienced complete freedom.
Utterly content in the scent of leather and horse,
as you always were when you
Went riding.
