I'm looking for a good, reasonably priced drover-style coat to wear in inclement weather while riding. Houlihan Horse Gear advertises a "Classic Pommel Rain Slicker." However, there is very little information given about this article. I sent an email requesting sizing information, the weight of the garment, the materials it is made of, and anything else that could help me understand what this item is. No reply.

So, has anyone here purchased this rain slicker? If so, what's your opinion of it?

Otherwise, any recommendations on a good rain slicker? I'm not especially concerned with something designed for the dead of winter in Idaho. If need be, I can wear layers of clothing underneath. But, I'd like a slicker of good construction that will hold up and protect me and my saddle.

Thanks for any help!

I will also be interested in the responses! I have quite a nice canvas "duster" with excellent coverage, but it's really too heavy for coastal Calif. winters ... well, for me, anyway. I "run hot". LOL. It's large for me also, I was thinking of selling it ... but I really like it so am not absolutely certain I'm ready to part with it. ;)

Hi guys,

Newbie alert here! Been watching and learning from afar but this one I can definitely join in on. I was in the same boat for awhile, coats I found were too heavy or too yellow! Then I found Shannon Wrango at Kansas Saddlery at a booth in Reno and bought the best coat ever!! It is black (slimming you know but they do make it in a dark yellow if you like that color), it is a very light canvas coated with a PVC layer that makes it waterproof! It has a thin layer of fleece inside and it has 2 ways of fastening depending on if you are riding or just walking (it widens and narrows). I love it and I know it was less than $100. I have roped in the rain before and you learn to just tough it out but now it will be a lot less tough with this coat. She is online at kansassaddlery.com. She really knows her stuff so email or call her as she is the most knowledgeable, sweet person!!

I absolutely hate the long suster type coats! if you have to get down, you get your ropes and stuff all caught up in the flaps that you really don't need. I wear chaps all the time when riding, but i wouldn't think of being out in the rain or snow without my chaps on. My old boss gave me an outback duster when i left, and after i rode in it a coulpe times, i took and cut the thing off just under the pockets, so it's kind of athree-quater coat now. i really like it. it doesn't have the liner, but i just wear and extra sweater of sweatshirt and i stay really warm. around here, if you can keep the dang wind out, you'll be okay!
