Thought we needed a little fun around here, so here goes...
YAY!!! I traded a eg* bit for these spurs, the bit was old, made by the old man, not a new one..nice shanks, beautiful silver...but a halfbreed mouth that I could not make work...so, it was a wall hanger. Saw these spurs, and decided to trade, and both of us traded well, I am happy, and so is he...the question I have, is that I am thinkin I might even wear these...they fit my boot, and the balance to them is nice..just two fingers between the heel band and the tip of the rowel, so your calf will touch before your spur will..I have never worn a drop this deep. So, do I wear em, wall hang em, or trade em. Plus, Reata says it is a bad picture...I thought it was really neat, see how I got the light to make a shadow off the rowel in the front? Genious...but the australian says NO!!!! She still says it is a bad picture...I told her we would take it to vote...She says shootin into the light is bad, but I kinda like the way the sun plays on em...so advice please, anything I should know about a drop, or should I wall hang em...I am gonna let you guess who the maker is...who do ya think? I will give you a hint...i.lol, no they are not reproductions...

love, red.

Bueno espuelas! Wear 'em........life is too short to "save" the good stuff for "someday". You didn't tell the age of the spurs, but they have a GS Garcia look to them.........if not that old, then Mark Dahl? Enjoy, Red.

These are a pair of E. G spurs I picked up after retiring my Crockett's and my horse stepping on the shank and demolishing my cheep feed store spurs. Lesson learned is you get what you pay for you buy cheep you get cheep.

AHHAAAAA. it is hard to tell from a picture, but they are El Gato's work...and I AM going to take them on a test run this afternoon...since the vote is wear them...you know what I like the best? it is the silver inlaid on the jingle-bobs..fascinating the craftmanship...and the detail. I have an old old pair of Blanchards, and you know, he used to harvest old steel from cars, and trucks to make his spurs..and now you know, they are gettin to be colletors price range..I like most of the older workmanship..

Gracias, JW, for asking, I think I did ok on the trade...I know he is thrilled with the bit, I could not use it, tho it was pretty, and I miss it..but, I haven't found a thing I don't like about these spurs...so I am gonna use em, and enjoy them..
RooMan, says he is gonna take a picture of his spurs, on a ride, so I am gonna keep checkin in to see if he managed to do that..these yutes are so good with the technology...so advanced, he will prolly have it all done and in order by tonight..

love,

That's great Red.........if I remember correctly, El Gato bit and spur had some outstanding craftsmen/women building goods for them, like Dick Fleming. By all means, use them.............I make my living with my gear, and I use the good stuff every day. Firstly, it is the good stuff because it works betta...........secondly, life is just too short to not enjoy what ever top quality gear a person can get their hands on. Enjoy...........JW.

Second this ... I use my Sara Hagel mecate pretty much every time I ride. Sara was thrilled to hear that; she says she makes them to be used, not hung on a wall. Don't know about spurs, but a good mecate just gets better. :)

You are correctomundo, JW, as always....El Gato, is not the most ancient of makers, but lots of folks learned the craft of spur/bit makin there...not as famous as the Garcias stable of spur and bit makers, but, I like to hold some of the old ones, and think about the stories they know, the horses, the travels.. and the secrets that they hold..a little romanticism in an otherwise practical girl.. I like to remember they were here before me, and will be here, after I am gone. But for today, I am keeper, along with you, of the traditons that brought them to life..keep them as practical today as 40 years ago, and that makes it worthwhile...(plus they are nice a drop shanked so my little pony may or may not think they are swell...lol) There
is a little wear on the rowels, and some scuffs and nicks, so these were not wall hangers..I wonder what part of their story I will be able to add?

I like them for sure but I tell you whats hard is to find a pair of dang spur straps that are long enough because of the heel band buttons on the band and don't extend up like many of the store boughts. I got a pair of the wing spur straps from Capriola and I "think" they might work on the very last notch with the spur sitting a little bit of a angle.
