Anyone catch it? I recorded it and just watched it. It was abosolutely AMAZING race!!! For those of you that missed it, the first filly in 105 years won the Belmont Stakes and the first filly ever to win at the distance. She took a face plant when the gates first opened, but she hung in there. She ran on the outside the whole distance. Battled Curlin in the stretch and won by a nose. A really fantastic performance. I was in tears.

I love that picture. She has a "take THAT!" determined look on his face and Curlin's eyes are bugging out of his head because he just doesn't have enough to catch that girl.

She made a tremendous and successful effort! It was an amazing race! Wonder how it would have turned out if Curlin had the 5 weeks rest that Rags to Riches had. Even so, it was the Lady's day and she smashed them into the ground!

I agree! I still get chills when I watch it. I just watched the Ruffian documentary. And I read the book ages ago. She's the only horse ever to be buried at Belmont. Facing the finish line. I bet Ruffian was giving her wings that day. Rags to Riches finished what she started....and even more so by beating FIVE other boys....it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

I just watched the Ruffian documentary. And I read the book ages ago. She's the only horse ever to be buried at Belmont. Facing the finish line. Aside from Man O'War, Ruffian is my favorite Thoroughbred ... I was just a kid when she was running and LOVED LOVED LOVED her then! I was SOOOOO excited about the match race and was so devastated when she broke down.
After watching the movie the other night (I taped it), I pulled out my Ruffian book - probably the first ever written about her as it was written in 1975 - and out fell all the articles I cut out of the paper & Sports Illustrated about her .... brought back all the sad emotions and loss for her. She was an amazing horse and we'll never know the extent of her talent. Rags to Riches brought back that feeling, but with a twinge for me .... I so would have loved to have seen Ruffian racing ... But I'll keep my eye on Rags to Riches and route for her against the guys! :-)
