LOL Franca.. This is My Tigger.. My little pride and joy. She is out of a T/b mare by a little Q/h Stud.. She is about 13 years old and was born here on the property.. (and that is where she will die too.. :-()
She will do anything I ask and I mean anything!!! and I trust her completely.
She knows more about me than I know about my self and has been the brunt of many of my Horsemanship experiments. Two years ago she presented me with a colt foal by my Australian Stock Horse, Buster, he was born about 10 feet from where Tig was born.. He is a ripper!!! I'm very proud of them both..
I posted this photo to see if I could and it worked!!! I might post some more now!!

That pic is a recent one of the mare that I don't ride anymore.

This is us in our very first Brannaman clinic in 1996:
http://rockincirclec.home.comcast.net/horses/ariel/images/brannaman96_2.jpg

I don't ride her much anymore (at least I haven't in about 2 years) because she's a major handful. We got along OK with Buck's help, and with the help of many others, but she's just one of those horses that won't ever be quite right, if you know what I mean. I have learned TONS from her, though. She has earned her retirement and just recently turned 18.

I'm sitting here in France, out of my normal time zone, and wondering where on the globe you might be, posting at this hour, Mares? If I were home I'd still be dead to the world. Reata's in Australia so it's getting towards the end of the day there. Time zone-wise France is smack in the middle between Calif. and Australia. It's very disorienting, LOL! But I'll be here a couple more weeks, just long enough to really mess me up for going back home.

Back to horses - OK, everyone post more pics! :)

I need to request some photos of my mare at "summer camp" in Wyoming. Man, I really miss her! But since there was no way she was coming to France with me I figured a little ranch work in Wyoming would do her a world of good while I'm gone. She's gonna be an old hand when she comes home and will be able to teach me a thing or two! Not that she isn't already my best teacher - has been from Day One.

FrancaV,

Isn`t technology amazing? Small world we live in nowadays.

I live in the Midwest. I posted at 6:51 A.M., horses already fed. Then I talked with Reata in Oz before she went to bed to END her day while I waited for a rainstorm to clear before I went back out to START my day. It`s a lovely spring morning here and Reata is starting her winter, shes telling me about turning on her electric blanket and sipping her hot chocolate.

Talk about confusing lol

FrancaV, Join us on the chat some nite. We get there about 9 Central Standard Time. We`ll ground you and make you feel like you are back in the States again. :-)

Talk about confusing lolI know! I have an Australian friend I'm in contact with almost daily - I help out a bit with her Australian Dressage forum. I'm the odd one out over there where everyone's talking about winter coming! However, winter is the competition season so in some respects we're in synch. Winter has us holed up indoors on account of the cold, and summer has the Aussies trying to escape the heat. ;)

Except (light bulb goes on) I might be able to join you on race day. The race starts at 3 pm France time and runs for 24 hours. I'll be up most of that time and probably looking for something to wake me up at about 5 am, LOL. For you guys that'll be 9 pm EST Saturday the 16th. Shall we make a date? Otherwise chatting for me will have to wait till I return to California!

Oh, Reata, thank you so much for posting my picture of Chilli...now this tecnology stuff, un believeable..I told Reata I joined photobucket, but it just got sold, to time warner, and the tutorials were not working, so I couldn't figure it out...I emailed a picture to her..(one in her vast collection)..from California to Australia it sped thru cyberspace...and SHE posted it for me...to think that 10 years ago we would never have known each other, and now post pictures, go to the Californios,(ours) work out problems with glass eyes,(reatas find) bucking horses,(theirs) losses of loves,(mine) illnesses endured,(theirs) reversals of fortunes, (mine)..injuries healed, (mine) children maimed, (mine) and always it is the ponies(ours)...who smooth the paths for us...and the friends we make, along the way, that we may never see, meet us here....what a great place this EH is. Thank you, Tall Em.

Now, for the picture, I should tell. I was attempting to build my loop, and the good horse was waitin his turn..just out of the picture, there was a steer, we called Steve, and Steve is a great steer, when ya catch his head, he stops, and you can practice your heel traps, all day long...Chilli is 7, and I have had him his whole life..knew him when he was 3 days old, and he picked me...I coulda had any horse I wanted..but there was just something about him, and I thought I would just wait on him, and see what gift he would bring...what part of me needed to be tended..he reminds me that hope, and try, and endurance, can take you a long long way...that and a good long trot..lol. Hope your day is great today.

What great pictures of everyone. I'm waiting for my copy of pictures from the Joe Wolter to arrive to post one of me and my guy.... if there is a decent one in the bunch.

Reata,

I think I might have been one of those at the Joe Wolter clinic. Due to an accident (I wasn't in it, just held up by it), I was running late and hadn't planned on riding in the morning portion, but the clinic hostess insisted I had time and pushed me to go get my guy saddled up. Well, he really needs at least four to five cinching moments as he can put an additional 4 inches on his barrel. I probably only gave him 3 and in a swerve to avoid someone stopping on the rail, the saddle slipped, I was able to step off, but he was trying to decided whether he wanted to run. I could feel Joe watching us and I could hear his conversation slow down as he waited for me to bring my guy's mind back to earth.

Then in the afternoon class, there was the cut-off instance with another horse and off I came off.... really good impression...sigh... At least he was good for the rest of the clinic and I think the auditor who was taking pictures got quite a few of us. I'm hoping for better ones of us with the cows.

Red; Thanks for the generous comments about Molly. You are right.....she is just as much at home, more so, working outside. She, as all the horses I ride, my own, and for others, don't see the inside of a pen very often......mainly just working cattle. Molly has gathered, branded, roped and doctored a lot of cattle.......and with her any way, you are better off to hit that long trot and check on some country and cattle before you come in the pen to work on some herd work.

JWR; that pen in the photos, as with everything else on our modest rancho, was built by me. The larger line posts are Osage Orange, hedge, bodarc...the name depends upon your local.........the steel you see is not sucker rod, it is relatively light pipe continous fencing mounted to the line posts. The wired on samller diameter stays are also hedge. Glad you liked the looks of it............it serves the purpose, and doesn't need to be constantly rebuilt.

Wee lass; Thank You for the kind comments.............our "staff" consists of me, Mrs. JW and the dogs............Mrs.JW is the photographer, and is a pretty good hand with a camera.........although I don't like having photos taken, and am reclusive anyhow..........she is usually prowling around though, and gets some nice photos............mostly, the best ones, without me in them.

Reata; Very cool photos............I have heard quite a bit about campdrafting, but never have seen it.............please do enlighten us.

That fence reminds me a lot of the fences we have in the Dominican Republic, except much fancier! Here is a picture of a road at my family's ranch:
http://inlinethumb19.webshots.com/6482/2021719450062041520S500x500Q85.jpg (http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2021719450062041520ymCebc)

I'm not sure what kind of tree they use...but it sort of reminds me of a black locust tree but I don't know if they have it down there. It's a tree that grows super quick. They start by planting saplings every 10ft or so and then string up barbed wire. Then they keep adding saplings - I'm willing to bet it's just branches of the other trees actually as they grow - and keep doing so until the barbed wire is completely gone and so all you have is a line of trees. You can tell how old a ranch is by thier fenceline. This ranch is just about 30yrs old so it's fenceline isn't mature yet. They usually don't let the trees grow big and tall and keep them small. The trees in this picture are actually considerably big compared to most.

WOW!!!! Jay Dubya... That is one nice outfit!!!

Nope JRW Aussies do not tie a rope to the tail.. don't know where ya got that one ..
Aussie stockmen use a stock whip and the Aussie saddle doesnt have a horn .. Stock are gathered and yarded for branding, doctoring and drafting.
So originated the Aussie sport of Campdrafting....
The modern campdraft has a pen(camp) of 6-8 cattle ( as 2 are used another 2 are added) The rider chooses one beast and cuts it from the mob (herd).
He takes it to the front of the pen and with a few quick blocks (turnbacks) tries to put a handle on the beast.. he then calls to the gatemen and they open the front of the camp (pen). He then follows the beast out into a large paddock and attempts to put the beast around a clover leaf pattern. Yes Red its very fast and a good horse will get right up on the beasts shoulder to push it round a turn .. There is a right hand peg and a left hand peg and then two pegs about 15 foot apart to simulate a gate Once the beast is around the 2 pegs and through the gate the judge gives a score.. Ya get about 45 seconds to complete the course and if you go OFF Course the judge cracks his stockwhip and you have to retire.
It sounds dam near impossible to do, but I can assure you when its going right it all just flows..
Buster in a registered Austrailan Stockhorse.. His pedigree goes back to foundation stock .. The Foundation stock were T/breds or Station horses chosen for their cattle sense, intelligence and sound limbs and feet.
They are very popular as Drafting horses.. I need to get Buster out drafting Maybe next season!!! But mainly Buster is my dressage horse..:)

Checked out campdrafting on YouTube..... guess who I found? Well that's not for me to post the link, but there is some interesting footage. Most of the clips just showed the part of cutting the single calf from the group and getting them through the gate. Two of the clips showed the figure eight movement.

I would say it's totally different than cutting American style. I think its a very cool sport now that I don't have to imagine them dallying from the horses tail.

Yipee-kay-aye!
JRW

ps. JW, I hope you will study the clips and tell me if you think its the same. I admit I dont' know a thing about either sport.

Martin Black uses a modified campdrafting pen for teaching horses to follow cows, turn them back and get ahead and stop them. Sort of a zone defense play. The horses catch on much quicker than the riders. Horses really stop, get back on their haunches and turn around. They don't have to be quick to keep the cow on the correct end of the pen.
Easy, efficient, low stress, cows and horses. People will always stress.
