I just got a new set of 1/2" mecate reins along with new slobber straps that advertised a 5/8" hole. The ends of the reins where the popper is attached are a little bigger than the holes on the slobber straps and I'm having trouble getting them through... any tips for threading them through or stretching out that hole a little more? My old slobbers have a small slit next to the hole which creates a little more give when attaching the reins.

Cut a slit. Start out easy and just cut as much as you need to.

Teamwork! One person holds while the other pulls.

Also helps to bend and twist he slobbers to get them more softer. If you don't care about the color of the slobbers try soaking it in olive oil or neatsfoot oil. It WILL darken the leather considerably. Make sure you wipe excess oil before trying to pull it through.
