This exercise in Doma Vaquera is pretty fantastic.
Found it on you tube. Please ignore all the other distractions.
You should see a Spaniard in black, on a bay horse, in a bright sunny
arena. If you don't, exit out please.
Notice the riders hands.

wow, that's fantastic!
man, that horse is real "up"! and that's what made it so good!
funny about those stirrups too. they hold the whole foot flat. you sure can see when they use the spurs.
also, i thought, i wonder about that tail tied up thing? yep, I would have the dang pole all wrapped up in the tail somehow. i suspect someone else did too.
the canter sideways was really the shining part.

Thanks for posting that again! It was posted on here back when the old BB was up. It's a great video. Although I must say Red's Lusitano Bull video STILL leaves me SPEECHLESS with my jaw open. I wonder why it's called "Doma Vaquera" I saw a lady doing it once a couple years ago. But "La Doma Vaquera" is feminine. And I've only seen vaquerOs doing it. The Spanish guy talking at the beginning of the video doesn't provide any insight either. But great video none the less!

the spanish guy talking......
ah, but we don't even need any words....it's all there.
Lmullen,
Have you tried this yet? I think I will get the cantering around a barrel with a rope down first. Seems like a garrocha pole might be hard to find. Wonder if a piece of pvc pipe would work?
Yrs,

ps. I got to try a garrocha at the Training for Courage clinic I went to last year. Well, I actually just carried it around for a while. It was pretty exciting to even imagine.

Got your msg.
No I haven't tried it. Been looking for a good pole.
The one you handled. About how long?
PVC is probably too light and too noisy? Have to get your pony used to it first. Whereas I think a wood pole might be easy for them.
Have you noticed, horses can discern natural fibers\items from manmade?
Your training clinic. Who with? Where at? ??????
Other topic--I really feel the need to rant about team ropers.
Went to a new arena last night. Old one closing down.
There were only about 10 people there. Still, saw nearly every bad, dangerous, behaviour and attrocious horsemanship you could imagine.
There, feel a little better.
good to see ya, IMullen, and I have watched that garrocha over and over again, and just marvelled at it...you know, I like to try new things, and I was wondering about that pole, too...I think, that if you call an outfit that makes english jumps, they have narrow poles that go on the top of some of those jumps, whadathey call em, "tick rails"? If that fails, let's check out what Keeps thinks, she owns a woman run lumber mill, in Montana...she know everything about wood...I will email her, and see what she thinks...I know that balsa wood is too soft, and light...and how long do ya think that pole is, anyways? On a quest... I will find out...I can not stand to think of doin it with plastic...flimsy, and unblanced, and prone to vibration, and bending, at the length it needs to be, I think..gonna be a fun summer...
love, red
They use a very hard wood. I think its hickory....
They are usually 13 ft long. Probably a pole vaulting pole would work too.
The probability of me getting a hickory pole is extremely remote, but I know where there are several pvc lengths of 12 ft.
I told the animals we were going to try this before and started dragging the pVC around with them so they get used to it.
Ya'll can be purists if you like, but just to play with it, FREE sounds like a good thing.

I forgot to answer your question about the clinic. It was with Paul Dufresne in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Here is a link to the video of Quimerico and Paul.

Not quite as elegant as the video on YouTube you posted about.
Here is some real riding: http://www.jbpre.fr/MERLIN.wmv I think it is one of Jacques Bonnier's horses, Orphéo, with his son, Xavier Martin riding. They have a very interesting website: www.jbpre.fr

Go to Home Depot or equivalent and purchase a 10 to 12 foot dowl rod. They work just fine. You want to start with a shorter pole than 13 feet as that is difficult to handle.
Hope this helps.
