Jim grew up on a Montana ranch. Horses are a central feature in his life. He started breaking colts at an early age. He has ridden and trained polo ponies, hunters, cutting horses, rope horses and barrel horses. For many years he thought roping calves was what life was all about. He is somewhat reformed now but continues to ride nearly every day and rope occasionally. Although his dad was a good horseman, Jim knew everything by the time he was fifteen and didn’t get dumb enough to learn much until he was close to thirty. Fortunately, that happened before he attended his first Ray Hunt Clinic in 1979. He regards meeting Ray and later spending time with Tom Dorrance as turning points in his life. Sometimes he writes about horses and other things that interest him. He also works in a bank and raises a few horses.
